It’s not often I find myself at a loss for words yet lately I’m filled with deep emotion that surpasses words. What I am witnessing in our very backyard goes beyond comprehension. As I am witnessing these events, my humbleness and Gratitude expand exponentially. There is so much love radiating from our home, that birds and animals are coming unafraid, knowing they are welcomed and loved. I speak of birds and animals coming very close to our home that otherwise would not. I look, I see, and despite me seeing, the “feeling” of disbelief still resides. It’s surreal. These things just don’t happen, at least not in my experience.
Not only that, it is an outright miracle that I was able to capture the natural phenomena as clearly as I did. In grabbing my camera, due to my astonished state, I never properly checked the settings on my camera, firstly not having the time to do so, and secondly, that thought just flew right out of my head when I saw what I did. I checked the exposure and that is about how far I got.
Now, however, my camera is set to TV (to control shutter speeds) for in hindsight when I realized I needed to have proper settings, this time when the next phenomena occurs, I’ll be more then ready! For those of you with photography know-how, my shutter speeds were 1/80th, 1/25th, and 1/5th. For those of you who don’t have a clue what I just said, those are very slow shutter speeds, not appropriate for either birds or animals. Yet when you see what I captured, perhaps then you will know a few facts. Yes, miracles happened. Yes, my shutter button finger and eye are lightening fast. My hands are super steady. And yes, I have been graced with a Gift that leaves me marveling at myself.
So what am I jabbering about? Suspense be gone! I photographed a Red Fox about 35 feet (10.67M) from our house on our property looking out from a tangle of bushes and a second shot when he came out in a clearing. Shutter speed on him was 1/5th of a second.
Two days from then, my husband was snowplowing paths in our backyard when he “felt” a presence and in looking up, he spotted a Cooper’s Hawk perched on a branch of a tree about 12 feet (3.6M) from the ground, sound asleep. Now this snowplow is huge and LOUD and you would think a man with a very loud machine would have this bird out of there. No. He occasionally opened his eyes and immediately fell back to sleep. My husband estimates he made a path about 10 feet (3M) from that tree and still that bird trusted him. The picture below of this bird of prey with his eyes open is when he was looking straight at me, standing in my dining room window with my camera. That shutter speed was 1/80th of a second.
And then yesterday, a Northern Flicker alighted on my tree with the bird feeders on it. Still clueless my shutter speed was not appropriate I began to shoot. That bird looked right at me when I began to shoot through our dining room window and then very purposely posed for me. I kid you not. Shutter speed for him was 1/25th of a second.
I really must learn how to shoot videos with my Canon camera for still pictures are not fully illustrating the surreal circumstances that have been happening in my life. Suffice it to say, seeing is believing, so with no further to-do, I shall show you. Be prepared to feel deep emotion straight to your heart. Then, I have a surprise for you at the end of my post, a video recorded on my cellphone.
The Red Fox
Cooper’s Hawk
Northern Flicker
And in closing, I introduce to you Mr. Blackie-Do, the feral cat who lives in the barn next door to us who I love with all my heart and who I feed. It took 2 years for him to decide I am his human. He walks with me to the bird feeder tree from the barn, and then home. Too cute!! Enjoy!!

Sheila, I am connected to Mother in ways that go beyond comprehension. Yes that Falcon knew I was there and he saw what I was doing. Not only that, he allowed me to capture him with my lens. That’s how it goes with me when I connect to Mother. It goes beyond a 3D understanding. So glad you loved this post. As I matter of fact, I do too. Much love to you!! xoxoxox

Abundant love, peace and joy to you and your kindred spirits, Avigail. I just read your latest post and what struck me is that my “sacred time” is when I am alone in a forest either with or without my cameras, communing with Mother. There are no words to describe those experiences for they transcend the “ordinary”. xoxo

Hello dear Amy, how blessed you are to be surrounded by so much love. I can sense it in your exquisite photos and oh my, how I loved that video! Mr Blackie doo, such a cutie, reminds me of my childhood Mr Muffins who adopted me. I’ve always loved cats so your video warmed my heart. And your words my soul. Beautiful post my friend. Hi, dear Miriam! Yes I know I am blessed and in fact, the period of time (a few brief days) that these incredible events happened, I felt as if I had entered a surreal world. Thank you on the video …. it was quite the challenge to fill up feeders and keep that video on Mr. Blackie-Do. I will improve over time.
I am indeed honored and pleased you enjoyed this post. And I thank you for reading what I wrote. There is a correction that I am passing on to you. That bird of prey is a Cooper’s Hawk as pointed out by another friend here. Lesson …. double check before I put “names” on birds.
Lots of love and JOY and peace!!! Keep shining your light and soak in LIFE in every moment you are given. BIG HUGS!!!! xoxoxo

Oh Amy, these are incredible. That fox through bush at those settings is amazing, it really highlighted him by taking all else from the focus. I’ll have to remember that. And the other lovely bird was caught perfectly, I think you are right, just for you 🤣 And your little minder across the yard seems to love every touch he can get, I think maybe from years of none he appreciates what love can really do from an Amy touch. And Mr Blackie-Do is a big lad, more of that nomadic lifestyle I’d say. Great post Amy, just the thing for a Christmas gift so thank you, I enjoyed it muchly 😀❤️🙏🏽🦋🎅🏽🦌🕊🎄🎁⛄️

Mark! I feel your Inner Child so strongly and every time you have been here lately, your presence brings with it such JOY! I so thoroughly enjoyed your comment. Mr. Blackie-Do at times would stay by me for hours if he could just wanting me to kiss him and stroke him and love on him. I can even pick him up! Yes it took 2 years for the bond to happen, but now? He is so loving and gentle! Every day I giggle and laugh as he very importantly leads the way to “his” tree and then shows me how to get home. LOL He is truly not that big of a cat. Yes he has put weight on him for the winter here to stay warm from the three meals per day I feed him and his brother.
Where the second cat is, is way on top of the hay bales so 4 times a day you can find me climbing up and down hay bales to feed him. Feral males will NOT eat out of the same dish and Mr. Blackie-Do will in fact, fiercely defend his dish not allowing the other cat (his brother) to eat. Thank goodness I’m well versed in Cat Psychology 101. LOL
I am so blessed!! Yes, I so agree with you that Christmas is all about love. I have such love all around me all the time. I AM so grateful! Sending you so much love and another thank you for the Christmas gifts you left for me in the emoticons. 💙🐾🌈🌟

It is so great to connect with the animals as you have dear lady. Take them from a sometimes raw place and let them again feel the love in that healing. Just like us my friend. A great lead up to Christmas with your love Amy, may you all (hubby, fur babies, Gee gee’s, birds and even the fox), enjoy this time and feel the love it is built on. Merry Christmas to you all 😀❤️🙏🏽🦋🎅🏽🦌🕊🎄🎁⛄️

Hello, dear friend. I thank you for your presence here and your admiration of the Gift I have been given. When animals and birds feel no fear from a human, that is evidently a sign that human is doing something right. My love for Mr. Blackie-Do is complex for in him I see and sense our late Doodles. His brother who is also in the barn, told me his name is Sweet Charlie, and again there, I sense and “feel” our late Charlie. My heart twists with so many emotions!
I send many blessings and much love to you and your family. Peace to all. Much love to you and yours!! (((HUGS)))!!! xoxoxo

Such beautiful photographs!
I think that the fox is hungry and if you put some small pieces of meat out for him on a regular basis, he might become even tamer. The flicker is just a wonderful bird with all those different bright colours.
The bird of prey looks rather fatigued, doesn’t he? I don’t think it’s a peregrine though. I would say it was a Cooper’s Hawk but you need to ask an expert on American birds.
You were so lucky to get those photographs. They are really impressive!

John, you correct me. Yes that is a Cooper’s Hawk. You remind me to research before I put a name to a bird. I again end up with mud on my face yet I still managed to give you a beautiful picture. I’ll remember this! Thank you!
The problem with putting meat out for the fox is that we have two feral cats living in the barn next door who I do not wish to see become that fox’s meal. I know where to draw the line here in order to maintain balance. As it is, one of the cats occasionally does bring down a bird and that Cooper’s hawk does as well. That I supposed cannot be helped. Nature is what Nature is.
I agree about the photographs. I have been gifted with exceptional blessings one after the other to the which I feel as if I have stepped into another world completely. Yes I was very very lucky indeed for again I was in the right place at the right time. That, and my shutter speed was completely wrong and in hindsight I honestly don’t know how I obtained such clear shots. “Someone” or “something” truly is with me!!
I so appreciate your “correction” to the which I went ahead and corrected my post. That lesson teaches me to double check. I again thank you!!!

You don’t need to worry about any cats. The thinking on this side of the Atlantic is that foxes know all about cats’ claws and don’t want to risk getting their eyes scratched. That isn’t established scientific fact, though, and I think you are probably right to be on the safe side.

Yes, John. Better safe then sorry. Both cats not that big and you just never know what desperation will do. Will be over to see you a bit later …. again THANK YOU for all your input. I really appreciate you!

Sheila, that cute cat makes me smile and laugh and feel all fuzzy. Heck all the beautiful souls in my life do. His brother, another feral, is in the barn too, but I’ve yet been able to get near him. He however is breaking down his reserve towards me and I am winning him over gradually. I’m so happy I could share this very special soul with you. He honestly is one of the most gentle cats I’ve even met and for a feral, something unheard of. Much love to you!! xo
