“Honey, I need your help.” Hearing those words I inwardly groaned, ’cause I know how complicated matters can get with Hubby on a job.
“How long will this job take?” Hubby replied, “15- 20 minutes”. Awh-right! No job of his to date [34 years] has ever been that fast. Taking a deep breath I said, “Sure thing, Hubby.”
What was this job that required my assistance? Hang on ’cause I’m about to hit you with a mouthful. Ready?
Hubby had to, (1) remove the neutral bus bar clamps and then (2) the neutral bus bars that housed all the neutral bus bar clamps, [where all the neutral wires were secured with screws] …
(3) clean them, and then (4) replace them in our electrical service panel
… for the entire house. All the neutral bus bar clamps had to be replaced with new ones. That meant
all wires in those clamps had to be removed from the old clamps, cleaned and then put back in the new clamps.
Did you get all that? Whew!
Come on. Does that sound like a 15-20 minute job to you? I had to hold a flashlight
because the electric had to be turned off. Throw in the fact, hubby decided to do this on rainy day. Remember that ….
Hubby cut the power and there we stood in the dark basement. Immediately I put my flashlight on and hubby unfailingly began the job.
Standing with flashlight, my arm extended, within minutes I could feel the strain of holding my arm up for that length of time. I refused to give into the burn in my neck and arms.
Suddenly without warning, the emergency sump pump
went on next to where I was standing. I nearly jumped out of my skin! I then heard water water water whooshing and when I took a peek I was immediately dismayed to see how high the water had risen. Nooooooooo!!! “Hubby!! You forgot about the sump pump!”
I heard Hubby say …. “No, I didn’t. Yeah I’ve got a better emergency sump pump that’s been on the shelf for five years. [Well, that doesn’t do us a whole lot of good NOW, does it?] This one, though, ought to be OK until I can turn the electric back on.” Sorry but that did not reassure me. I’ve lived through the nightmare of bailing water from a flooded basement.
Hubby it seems must have a deadline hanging over him in order to get the job done. This time it was the sump pump. Be still my thumping heart!
The entire time I held that flashlight I worried that the water would overflow. Then … I got an elbow to the chest ….
OW!
Nothing said as Hubby continued the job at hand as if nothing happened. He was so intent on what he was doing he wasn’t even aware that he had accidentally hit me. I understood and kept steadily holding that flashlight. Hubby, you are very lucky you have such an understanding wife!
I had to follow with the beam of light wherever his hands went and having my arms up and extended, I thought surely my arms were gonna fall off. Standing next to a potential flooding source and concentrating exclusively to follow Hubby’s hands I managed somehow to see the next elbow coming …
So I swayed backwards missing the elbow’s main impact and only getting a slight brush on the chin. All this without letting that beam of light drift. At that exact moment, my martial arts training came back. My goodness! I can still do this stuff!
Minutes dragggggg-ed on. When I saw Hubby struggling to get a rusted wire out of one of the holes in a clamp. I said, “Hubby, get a needle nose pliers to pull it out.” And so he did. “Wow! Thank you, Amy! Your idea worked!” Ha!
Point 1 for me!! Goodie goodie!
When we were half done, Hubby thankfully turned the electricity back on allowing the sump pump to empty. Which also meant a break for us. Running upstairs I put Myaderm CBD cream on my neck, shoulders and lower back. I collapsed on the couch groaning …. only half done …. What has Hubby got me into this time?
Determined my arms would not fail, we returned to the job after resting. Again the same thing …. holding steady that beam of light. And again a suggestion from me when I saw trouble brewing. “Hubby, crimp that wire so that it will go in the clamp easier.” Off he went to get the crimper, did what I suggested, and smoothly that wire went in. “Great idea, Amy! Thank you, again!”
Point 2! Right on!
F-I-N-A-L-L-Y, we finished the job! Oh. My. Goodness. Three hours later [What happened to that 15-20 minute job?], my arms, neck, and shoulders throbbed and burned. Yet it was all worth it when I heard Hubby’s praise,
“Honey, I could not have done that job without you and no one could have done a better job then you. You stayed right there with me and it was as though the lights were on, I could see so well. Thank you!”
[BIG HUG from Hubby!]
POINT 3! Slam Dunk!

Yes Hubby is handy and yes I have learned patience. As another follower just commented, he has done this job and he admits this job is IMPOSSIBLE in the dark, yet he and his wife did it too. This job was INTENSE!!! 😉

You sympathize with Hubby? Wait a minute! Just like a man to do so! What about me holding a flashlight for THREE hours? I must admit, however, that this job was INTENSE. 😉

Good job, Amy (and hubs). It’s hard enough working in the confined space of those panel boxes, but doing it in the dark is impossible. I’ve had to add neutral bars to our panel box, and I didn’t want to do it with the power on or in the dark. I enlisted the Editor’s help.
Love the photos – it seems fall is coming and at least one handsome squirrel is getting ready.

Only someone who has experienced this job, Dan, KNOWS how intense it is!! Bless you and THANK YOU for this comment! I passed your words onto hubby who said he got the “goosebumps” when he heard you too did this job with your “editor”. The ONLY way to do this job is to have all power off which you well know. I hope I explained this job good enough. This was a very complicated post for me to do. As for my photos …. THANK YOU! ☺️☺️☺️

Just a suggestion for you and hubby for future jobs that come up…Head lamps are a must to save the arms and they are worth every penny…Have a happy weekend….Much love…VK ❤

Hubby does have a head lamp and at one point, no make that a couple points, I TOLD him I’m quitting this job and for him to put on his head lamp! LOL My arms just about fell off, VK! SOOOOOO happy to hear that you laughed. I worked “hard” to bring across humor in this very complicated post! Happy weekend, dear friend!! 😘😘😘

So familiar. I’ve stood holding s flashlight many times and of course he is irritated at the hard work so if my poor weak arm wavers he yells at me! I feel for you lady. Good job though! ♥️🌺🤗

It is SO hard to keep your arms up and extended for a long time, Holly. I’ve had my share of yelling at too, believe me, but that day, no. Your Hubby IMO needs to understand how difficult it is to keep that light shining steadily even though the arms are on fire. He needs to give it a try! (smile) Much Love to you!! 💝💝💝

Nice job and I’m sure that it saved some money, too. I got one of those head straps with an led light attached to it. It makes working with limited light much easier. Your photos of the onset of fall are beautiful!

Hubby has a headlamp as well, Rob. But he was insistent that I helped with a flashlight because the headlamp would not have been sufficient for this job. His hands were moving all over the place plus it was a very limited access in which he had to get his fingers into. You can be sure that I did mention the headlamp a few times when my arms were about to fall off! As for my photographs, thank you so much! I really have not had the opportunity to get outside much with my camera because it has been raining so much here. Hopefully in a few days these weatherman are correct in that nice weather is coming which will afford me to get out and start shooting Fall Foliage. I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Another thank you for taking the time in reading my post and for commenting. 💕😚💕

things considered. Do you guys do jobs on the side?

LOL In other words I lost you. Tee hee. Truth be told, Prag, IF I had read a post like this prior to what I did with hubby, I would have been lost too! It was a great learning opportunity for me!
I haven’t been out and about much because there has been so much rain here. I hear the weather is going to improve so I will be getting glorious Autumn colors in the landscapes. THANK YOU for the compliment on my pictures. 🍁💞🍁

Well you didn’t lose me 🙂 I read through with great interest, the moment I saw the squirrel picture, I forgot everything else. As if life happens in the background so busy and you manage to scout and share the beauty of earth with us. You are so very welcome.

You did an amazing job here. I think not only your hubby but many men could not have done it. What a project. You are such a skilled allrounder, Amy. Your hubby is blessed. But I think you would rather work 10 hours in the garden than 3 hours as an electrician …💖

THANK YOU, Erika! My husband is amazing in all he can do. Once he gets moving that man does not stop! I know to do many things, dear friend, many of which I usually don’t speak of. I just do them! This was just too good to pass up so yeah I did talk about this, and to throw a humorous slant to this story as well. Oh yes I would much rather be outside then being an electrician yet the thrill of using my hands is deeply instilled me as well. I learned a LOT by helping hubby. 😘😘

I wonder if a camera tripod could adapted to hold a “torch”, as we call them? That was a huge job to do yourselves, so a celebratory dinner is in order.

Now that’s a really good idea, John. I actually don’t (yet) own a camera light and hubby having a head light said it wouldn’t be good enough for this job. Hence, my arms falling off for a good cause. Instead of a dinner, we are celebrating by planning a bike ride on a path that runs parallel to a local river here that is really beautiful. ☺️

Barbara, I’ve learned to use humor to my advantage when life throws rotten tomatoes. I’ve also learned that when I see life through a humorous lens, that experience is not so bad as it could be. I love that squirrel picture too. Hubby laughed so hard when he read this post and got to that squirrel picture. LOL Much Love to you! 💞

Awesome story! Love it how you two work together! I have in my possession two head lamps for just such occasions! They really come in handy! And then there’s the sump pump . . . . . Great photos, the tool descriptions are cool!! Thanks for sharing! Much love to you! Donna

Ah, the head lamp. Yes hubby has that but he claimed it would not be good enough for this job and I can honestly see why. It was a tight space to get his fingers into and his hand would have actually blocked the light from a head lamp. I am SO glad you enjoyed this post, Donna! I learned a lot helping in this job. I honestly was surprised by how relatively easy this job went compared to past jobs I have assisted hubby with. I never know with that man. LOL Much Love to you!! 💖💖💖

That’s what makes a relationship work. Both giving 100% equally sharing and loving and serving. Well done to you and well done to your husband! My only wish is that I had one of those handy husbands around sometimes as I’m usually the one trying to do most of the work by myself. But I’ve been doing it for so long, I almost don’t even know how to ask for help anymore. 😀 I really enjoy reading your sweet posts Amy. Hugs! ❤

Hi, Melissa. Being married to the man I am brings along with it many challenges, yet when we intend to work together as a team, we do it. He goes overboard in wanting to everything for me to the point I must say … no, but I want to do this! I like using my hands and figuring out how things work. When I get stuck, I do ask for his help then. I’m just so glad you enjoyed reading this post, a post that was quite complicated for me to put together. Much Love to you!! 💖

For another time of work without light, you should buy a head lamp with LED, they are cheap, also in battery and work very well. Much love to you and your photos are beautiful ❤

Hubby has a headlamp, Irene. In this case due to the space where his fingers had to go into (VERY small), and because his hand would actually be blocking light from a headlamp, I had to hold a flashlight above where his hand was working in order to give him light to see by. Much Love to you!! 💞💞💞
