As is most evident from the sky in this photograph, it is chilly here in WNY.  This shot was taken while driving out on a country road that once upon a time was almost deserted and typical of a country road with potholes and tarred patching.  I haven’t traveled this road for many a year and the day this image was taken, I was stunned that in my absence housing had sprung where once wild woods stood and the traffic was flying with cars evident everywhere.

Progress.  *sigh*  Hubby and I chose to live where we are because it was “country”.  Now?  It is getting harder and harder to find quiet and solitude.  At least most of the homes I saw, or should I say estates, did incorporate planning to keep a lot of the trees standing.  Thank goodness!  Yet the traffic noise where once was quiet is appalling.  When I crave Silence I head for the forest found in Chestnut Ridge Park which I just may be doing today for one last “Color Chase”.  It is raining outside with barely any winds, so today would be the perfect opportunity to experiment with my new umbrella hat.  I’ll see how this day goes!

  1. Wow for a colorful shot, as you got there, Amy 🙂 Really beautiful and amazing. Great that some trees still are allowed to live in this area. Cities are developing and growing and growing….. I love the quiet peace too and understand you so much. You are so lucky to have these woods to visit, at least. Enjoy your trip.

    1. I am lucky, Irene, that this forest and a Nature Reserve is nearby that I can go to soak up Solitude and Quiet. I couldn’t even think about living in a city for the noise and the amount of people would not be conducive to the way I must live. Going out yesterday I realized that the Full Fall is really over. There is a sense of sadness with me today yet Seasons do not stop and soon Spring will again appear. I have hundreds of pictures to look at between my flowers and all the color I found this Fall when it is dreary outside and I’m longing for warmth and color again. I’m really focusing on being in the now moment and embracing Winter with Joy. 🙂 ❤

  6. Beautiful trees amy. It’s sprawling here too. When I first moved to this town back in 1980, it was sleepy and quiet. I loved that about it yet I was only 30 minutes from the city. Now? OY!! And the freeways are packed and they keep building. I wonder where all the cars will go? It’s gotten crazy and I’m glad I’m not working so I don’t have to commute in it!

    1. It’s gotten crazy here too, Laura. Our street alone has become a highway of sorts with at times non-stop traffic. When my windows are open the noise hurts my ears! I like quiet and sleepy darn it and now to find that I have to hike in a deep deep forest. I’m glad I’m no longer working because I could not tolerate on a daily basis the amount of cars. Just to get from my house to Como park which is about 5 houses down from us, I must walk our street and there are times I have had to jump on the grass or almost into the drainage pit in order not to get hit. It’s awful! There has been a building cap here for years! Yet the building continues. How I long for the days when our street was so quiet it was fun counting how many cars in one hour would pass. Two? Three maybe? Now? Hundreds! Grrrrrr ……

      1. Oh wow! You have traffic right next to you. I guess I’m a bit removed from it because we’re in a golf course development that’s gated. But I can hear it in the distance. It’s a hum that wasn’t there before. Fortunately at night it’s very quiet. It’s crazy though. Our freeway here is now busy from 2:30 pm – 6:00 pm and from 6:00 am to 9:00 am!

    1. Thank you, Tiny!!! The chasing is officially over as of yesterday. The peak has come and gone. I did use my umbrella hat with great success. I did have to protect my camera however because it still got mist on it. It really rained! ❤

  8. Wow Amy, the colors really popped in this picture. We didn’t get much color this year compared to last year. Sorry to hear about your increased traffic. That is one of the reasons we love it out here. We are about 3 miles to town. Hugs ❤

    1. Sadly, Kathy, we focused on this area in the 80’s because it was country, just farm land. That no longer holds true today. One of our neighbors sold off huge chunks of his land making him very rich and he is the cause of a lot of the development. What a shame. And yes I really did get color this year. Our peak is over with so I am SO glad I went out last weekend to capture what I did. Lady Luck again was sitting on my shoulder. 🙂 ❤

      1. So sorry to hear that, Amy. Sounds like that neighbor by selling sure made a huge difference. We live in a mini subdivision with about 7 houses spaced far apart. Only traffic is people that live here and then surrounded my big farms. Hugs ❤

      4. We have no ability to move anywhere until these fur kids have gone to heaven and the cats we take care from the barn are there as well. In the meantime, I do my best where I live now. (((HUGS))), Kathy. I would love to be your neighbor! I really mean that!! ❤

    1. Our peak is officially over with, Van. *sigh* I got lucky this past weekend in going out when I did. The wind and the rain brought all that glorious color down. We still have green trees here but I think they will just yellow, brown and drop. It’s been a very strange Fall. ❤

  11. Such glorious colours. I live in a town where I am 5 minutes from the countryside – and 5 minutes into town – the best of both worlds. I know what you mean about needing peace and quiet – soothes the soul.

  15. Beautiful Amy, a magic kaleidoscope of color in this picture. And I’m sorry to hear the calm of your ‘patch’ is slowly being invaded. It’s those humans, maybe there is a spray or something to thin their numbers out a bit 😀
    And good luck with the hat, I’ll send some energy for a calm day…mind you, that battle with mother nature I think i might come out second best…but it is done with love regardless ❤ 😀

    1. K. The verdict is in about the hat. The thingie that is supposed to work to keep the straps tight under my chin doesn’t work so I ended up holding on to the straps. I need to cut them so I can tie them under my chin. Gusts of wind are tricky so make sure it is a realitvely calm day. It kept me dry even at times when it was pouring out. My camera I still had to protect because it still got misted on with the heavier rains. It is comfortable once you get the hang of wearing an umbrella on your head. So other then the thingie that doesn’t work, I say thumbs up. Oh one other thing too. When I was shooting I had to be careful that the edge of the umbrella was not in the picture. I had to move the umbrella up a few times or hold it up so that the rim would not show in my photo.
      As for a people spray would love it!!! LOL 🙂 ❤

      1. Yayyy! So it works reasonably well, just that hiccup. And as for the umbrella getting into the picture, that may work itself out the more you use it I suppose.
        Just don’t wear it around your babies, they’ll think some strange beast has eaten their mom 😀
        Working on the spray…it will be filled with self love, that will scatter them till they come to terms with themselves…then they will be very love-able people to be around 😀

      2. I stand corrected, Mark. No hiccup. I wasn’t using the thingie right and just my luck AFTER I cut the straps just now I really looked at this thingie and said hmmmmm …. what if I did it this way. And sure enough it works!!! DUH!! Engineer I am not!! LOL And that spray sounds lovely. I order some by the case load!! Beautiful!!! 🙂 ❤

      3. Oh Amy, that is so funny, and I’m laughing WITH you, not at you. I’ve done that before too, so don’t feel bad. You are now armed with much engineering because you now DO understand wise lady.
        Like all of life, we cannot understand until we try, and many would not. You are now in Superhero class because you dared to do it, just like your hiking 😀

      4. I’m laughing at ME, Mark, because of the things I tend to do sometimes. I’m artsy yet smart and yes I love to figure things out but for some reason on the day I had to figure out how to use that thingie the reasoning just flew right over my head. And of course I figured how to use it AFTER I cut the strap that was in one piece. *sigh* At least I knew enough to burn the edges so they don’t ravel. LOL And if I am a Superhero, then you make me blush. Thank goodness you see “me” and not my oopsies. Heck it is my oopsies that make me unique. Tee hee …….. 🙂

      2. We get SNOW and it gets COLD in winter. Yes we do live in a very beautfiul part of the world, I must admit, yet some of the seasons are a bit much. I know you love Fall, yet could you live with snow, digging your car out and scraping the ice off the windows and windshield? Could you shovel the snow and drive in it? Grey skies almost every day. Cold so cold that your face hurts when the wind hits it. Yep, that’s cold.

      3. I have always been the kind of person that prefers cloudy days over sunny, that may sound weird but I do. I love the cold too that’s is why I love fall and winter over summer. Now I admit that living up north does get intense but I guess you can’t gain without losing some. I have lived in Atl for many years and now I am in the west but my ideal destination will always be someplace where I can fully experience all the seasons! 🙂 Have a great weeknd Amy! 🙂

      4. Even though I complain sometimes, I really do need the Seasons too. This summer was too sunny, too hot and day after day of blue sky and sun was just too much for me. I was shocked by my reaction. The main thing I love about Fall is the smell ….. I LOVE the smell of earth and leaves. 🙂

  17. A very colorful Image of the passing Season. Fall here in PA is always alive with color. Around my area, the color is almost at it’s peak. Soon the cold wind and rain will bring down the leaves and leave nothing but a bare tree against a grey sky. Nature always repeats herself every year. I never grow tired of seeing what is before me this time of the year. It will snow here also, but you never know when. When it does I’ll be “out there” with my Nikon or Pentax, if it’s not too cold.     1. Our peak has come and gone. No matter the temps I am out taking pictures. I have the gear and the clothing to do so. When it gets extremely cold, that is when I say no. Other then out I am outside in all kinds of weather. 🙂 ❤

      1. Even though I don’t know where your from, I also tend to stay inside during extreme cold or heat. Don’t care to take my camera gear out in the rain at all. The cold tends to make my ole’ bones creek a bit!

      2. Yep, I have the same bone creak here. The trick for me is to make sure I am going at a good clip to keep the circulation going and to dress warm. I actually hiked today in the pouring rain with my umbrella hat on. No camera today. I was taking a mini vacation. I did however use my cellphone and posted those photos on FB. I can’t help myself. I am a fanatic when it come to photography. I LOVE it!!! 🙂 ❤

      3. I have the same problem(?) if and when I get out there. Pouring rain will keep me inside. Don’t want to get camera gear wet at all. I’m fussy with that. I’ll take a look at your Images. Stay well, AmyRose.

      4. I don’t like to get my camera wet either, Les, and even with the head umbrella I have I take care that my camera and lens stay as dry as possible. When walking about in wet weather, there will be a mist to contend with even under an umbrella. I take care of my camera like I would a stack of gold. It means that much to me!!! 🙂

    Yes, it is hard to find spots where growing housing does not get to. It looks like any patch of lands will bound to have houses built on.

  27. Yes I know what you mean Amy about choosing a quiet spot to live.. Progress means more homes and industrial estates are built nearer and nearer.. Where I live too this has happened.. At a great consequence too to Wild Life.. As hedgerows were uprooted and fields turned into homes..
    We need homes, but sometimes not enough is done to look after loss of habitat, meaning foxes and badgers trails are crisscrossed with roads leading to road deaths.. And birds no longer have adequate nesting sites or places to shelter in the winter..

    The wheels I know must keep turning as we evolve through time.. But like you I wish more forethought would go into respecting our great Earth Mother and those creatures whose lives depend upon her ..

    1. This is one of my pet peeves, Sue, that these contractors have no heed for the land, of the original inhabitants of the land. I know of a subdivision who are all in an uproar because of geese and the mess they leave. Well, guess what? The geese were there first and that is their home. Yes I understand they make a mess, but those who gobbled up this land should have taken in into consideration what they really dealing with. Of course most do not. Now the homes I saw on a country road recently (this pic is from there) I did see an effort into keeping as many trees as possible and building around the natural landmarks. Cool in my opinion!! Very!! 🙂 ❤
