Mother’s Power

This photograph was taken with my Canon 6D on August 21st at 7:53pm.  The dark “sheet” that is seen that almost looks to be an overhang, is actually one huge black cloud coming in fast.  Standing there I could smell, feel and see the violence this storm held and the hairs on the back of my neck actually stood up.  I didn’t know whether to run for safety or keep taking pictures.

I opted to keep snapping and I live to tell the tale.  Do you know that only two drops of rain fell from this storm?  No kidding!  Here it looks like the sky is going to just open up and pour a deluge but that never happened.  I was sure there was going to be a tornado or hail, and to watch these clouds seemingly just poof, disappear, I honestly couldn’t believe.  I’m happy now that I decided to take pictures of this incredible display of Mother’s Power!

  1. Wow, so amazing shot Amy 🙂
In Spain, we do often have thunder and hails without one drop of water. In Denmark, you run in safety as soon it begins, because you only use to have few seconds before the rain go crazy.
    Much love ❤ Irene

    1. That is what it looked like it was going to do, Irene, just open up and pour and I mean pour. But it did not. One crack of thunder and then the a few drops of rain, that’s it. The wind picked up and the clouds scuttled across the sky leaving a rainbow which yes I did get too. (smile) ❤

    1. I could barely believe my own eyes, Scott. And thank you for the compliment. If it were not for hubby dragging me off the couch I would have missed this. When evenings come around, most days I’m just plum tired. 🙂 ❤

    1. Yep, it was one of those times, Susan. Fear up in my throat yet so mesmerized by what I saw I just had to get more pictures. Just incredible show by Mother that evening that again left us without rain. *sigh* I was SO sure finally we would get some and then some!! Nope! Joke was on us! LOL But I did get some spectular pictures! 🙂 ❤

      1. Thanks for the encouragement, Susan. I know I can do better and that is where the frustration lies for me. There is a huge learning curve with this new camera and to try to get settings where I can produce the same or better results when I do macro is overwhelming. BUT I’ll do it!!! Bless you for the pat on the back. It really was needed!!! 🙂 ❤

  2. I was absolutely mesmerized by this picture! So powerful! I can’t believe only 2 drops of rain fell but I bet someone got pounded nearby. By the way, my son did something to my computer so every time the word cloud shows up, it looks to us like it says butt. You can imagine, I had to read the post a couple of times until I realized why it was reading in such a way!!

    1. Well, “2 drops” is my way of saying barely any rain fell at all. GRIN. For a mere few seconds a few heavy fat raindrops fell and then stopped. And your son sounds like he is both a prankster and a very intelligent one at that! I laughed out loud when I read what you wrote. LOL I hope your son knows how to get back cloud instead of butt. 🙂 ❤

    1. Yes I was in awe, Carol. Both my husband and I were OMG’ing and OH WOW’ing, just goggling at what was before our eyes. Just one incredible display of the absolute Power that Mother has. And man “thinks” he is so great and so all powerful? Thank again. 🙂 ❤

    1. Yeah, Kathy, this cloud cover was one of the most dramatic I think I have ever seen. Now I could be wrong for my memory of late has become hazy as it realizes how tired it has become (my brain). But not to have any rain even with these ominous clouds really surprised me. Our weather has been so weird and still is today. Robins are still here, birds who normally migrate in the middle of August. The popular trees normally begin to drop their leaves in August and still have yet to do so. Hummingbirds still here who should be gone by now. The heat is staying and the drought is continuing. I think this year the leaves are going to fall fast and furious which means I have to be ready with my camera to catch the action. I hope I’m wrong. 🙂 ❤

      1. It sure was dramatic that is for sure. It really does sounds like the drought has been severe for you. We haven’t seen robins the last few weeks. We have been around 80 the last week but suppose to cool down to the low 70’s. Will do a rain dance for NY. Just typing that has me smiling. It would be a sight to see! LOL

      2. It rained here last night and this morning, Kathy! Thank YOU for the rain dance! LOL Cloud cover is perfect for a hike with my camera so if it continues NOT to rain, I am going. I need to. My spirit cries for that green and silence right now!!! (((HUGS))) ❤

  3. Beautiful sky and beautifully captured Amy. I’m glad your instinct is to stay and get some good photos, just make sure you hang around in order to share them. I have to ask, how’s the adjustment to the new camera going? The photo is wonderful, but was it easy? Easier? Easy enough? “Oh Dan, it’s never easy, I only make it look easy”

    1. OK. Firstly thank you for the compliment. Now for the answers to your questions. I’m having a heck of a time with macro and have become discouraged. I have yet to find the “golden combination” to be able to take macro shots like I did with my other camera. There are so many possible combinations it makes my head spin. This is going to be trial and error basis. Frustrated yes because it took me years to develop my “technique” and now it seems I am starting all over again from scratch. As for landscape my camera is a dream. I still struggle and am not confident of taking shots while the sun is high in the sky, but that is not new. I have yet to find the solution in order to shoot in broad daylight other then flipping the camera to auto, which I just may do. My brain hurts from thinking so much! I Love shooting landscape on the lower f stops and so far I have succeeded in getting what I want. The size and weight are about the same as my old camera so there is no big adjustment there. Good thing my inner urge is focusing on landscape instead of macro right now. Just thinking of doing macro makes me groan. And then there is the color. It seems either my full frame pics are showing differently on Petals and FB then my other camera. In other words what I see in my editing rooms is not exactly what I see on my blog when I publish. My eye is exacting so I do see the difference. I’ve just about to the point with FB to stop posting there because my images are looking terrible lately. Frustration there again because I know what they look like in the editing rooms. I’ve thought maybe my aspect ratio is wrong and no it’s not. The overall pic is coming out too dark when published and I am scratching my head because I am editing exactly the same as I was before. *sigh* You asked, now you have gotten an earful. Really appreciate you asking, Dan. Honestly. I have a lot of learning to do and this brain just doesn’t want to think anymore. What can I say? Am I still making it look easy? Curious minds and all …. 🙂

      1. God bless you for the encouragement, Dan! I mean that. You have no idea how discouraged I am regarding my macro shots. I will not stop, however, until I figure out what I need to figure out. I’ve become a bit too exacting, I think, not giving myself enough allowance for the camera change. I’ll be more tolerant of me, and think kinder thoughts regarding my camera as I do macro as well. I haven’t come this far to fail now. The whole point of my photography is for me to get lost in it and to ENJOY it. I’m smiling as I just wrote what I did. 🙂 ❤

    1. I know. It was one solid ominous black cloud and the way I took the picture unless you look closely to see tree branches and leaves, the black really looks like an overhang. That’s why I explained what I did. To see this massive blackness covering the sky was creepy and scary. And then the letdown. No storm at all. We’ve had the oddest weather here of late. ❤

  4. Hi, Amy.
I’m new here. My name is Heena and I’m a writer.
Your photos are really beautiful and the words are really deep and meaningful.
I’m glad I found your blog. Looking forward to reading more from you 🙂
    Have a great day!

    1. Welcome to WP, Heena. I just read a post of yours and found it to be powerful and very well written. I didn’t realize that was you (sorry but I have so many followers) until now so that being said, I am following you. I don’t follow everyone who follows me, mainly because it is impossible for me to do but more importantly I have gained friends who interact with me and that is more important to me then followers. I hope you find my work to assist you in your Life Journey and that it inspires you. I am going through a transition right now having a new camera, so my latest work is really not up to “Amy’s standards”. I’m a work in progress, at times nerve wracking because I put years worth of learning with my other camera only to find myself it seems at stage one again. OH the learning curve …… 🙂 Welcome to Petals!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

      1. Okay, I guess I might have messed it up while writing. I’m new here as in your blog and not WP.. hehe… I’ve been on WP since last 3 years almost 😀
Anyway, I understand what you mean. Happens to me too 🙂 And I’m really happy to be following you. (Thanks for following my blog too 🙂 )
And wow, you’re a pro photographer. I’m really looking forward to seeing your photography (and if possible then I’ll also learn something from them.)
        Great to connect with you!
        Hugs ❤
