What Comes Down Must Go Up (5 IMAGES) Part 3 of 3

At least in this case when one is out trekking on a hiking trail … in going down on said trail that one must go up in order to get back to the vehicle one has driven in.  There is no other way unless one has wings.

In packing up our gear at the Eternal Flame site, we carefully looked around to make sure nothing was left behind.  Hubby and I then attached ourselves to backpack, camera bag, and tripod bag.  Once that was done, we headed on back.

Distance wise it was not a long hike, but altitude wise it most certainly was!  Once we began to climb out of the Eternal Flame ravine, we never stopped going up.

Turning a corner as we finished climbing out of the ravine itself and preparing ourselves for the intense incline to come, my eyes just about fell out of my head!  How did I miss what I was just now seeing?  OH. MY. GOD.

My eyes had been completely focused at my feet for me to stay upright on the way down.  Concentration being so absolutely complete I knew there was a spectacular view around me but I did not have the luxury to shift my gaze from my feet.  So in hiking down that trail into the ravine I honestly was unaware of what was totally around me.

Which got me thinking.  How much in Life do all of us miss when we are focused or concentrating on something?  My answer.  A lot.

Grabbing my camera I began to take shots of what I can only explain as an Alice in Wonderland experience.  Due to erosion, the roots of the trees on that steep hill showed themselves in such a way that the surroundings did not even look real.

You tell me.  Below are the shots I took with my mouth hanging wide open, that mouth saying over and over again WOW, and my eyes truly not believing what I was even seeing.

Now you can really see what my husband and I chose to experience, packed like mules all to get to the Eternal Flame.  How many of you would be willing to do what we did?  And oh, for all of those who expressed concern about my fall, I AM OKAY!  No bruises, no sprains, no breaks.  I did experience an inflammation in my chest probably due to getting totally wet and chilled.  I felt so ill a few days last week that I really thought I would have to be seen in an ER.  Bless my husband who came to the rescue with a combination of Homeopathy Remedies, which assisted my body to heal.

So all in all, this story ends well.  Yes I achieved a milestone by going to the Eternal Flame but will I go again?  The answer is no.  This hike really was rough going.  The good news is I am still alive and well.

  1. Wow, this is absolutely stunning, Amy! I get you with that concentrating on one thing and not seeing the surrounding. I think, it depends. When we focus on things which are not helping anyone or which cannot be changed or controlled then we are missing the moment. But then again we need to stay focused in some way and not wanting to be everywhere at the same time. Again, we would miss what is now. Very important that you don’t look around you while walking a difficult path like you did. But it is a very good point to think about.

    1. Yes I know. The “feeling” I had in the Presence of these mighty Trees was being surrounded by Divinity and Power and Mystery. To see the way these roots all connected blew me away! This is how they communicate, I would stake my life on it! Amazing experience!!! ❤

  4. Now that was a scene Amy. Was their any Fairies or Dwarfs among the roots of those tree’s 🙂
    It is an eerie view for sure, not something you see everyday. I suppose if you saw it going down it may have pulled you up from going there in the first place 🙂
    But it has left a wonderful memory, you will laugh about it later….just not now while your body heals 😀

    1. My body has healed, Mark!!! That is the wonder of Homeopathy when you know what you are doing. And as for Fairies and Dwarfs I sure felt them. You talk about a Magic Place!!! I felt more fascination with these roots then I did at the Eternal Falls. What a way for this trip to end! Amazing! ❤

  5. Oh, my…wow! WOW! This is exactly what I said when I saw the images of the trees, especially images 1 & 3. You are right, it’s like being in Alice in Wonderland. What an amazing adventure! It reminds me again of the adage: “Sometimes, you just need to look up”. 🙂
    It’s amazing how nature adapt to their environment to survive. It makes me think of what Jesus said to humans: “Oh, ye of little faith” because we have all the wit and necessary body parts to easily adapt to everything. We do, but without complaints. Look at those trees. Amazing. We tend to take things for granted.
    I enjoyed reading the entire series. Humor really comes handy when telling a story and you are a natural, Amy. I love reading your posts. Thank you for sharing your amazing adventure. I’m glad you and your husband made it back without a problem or injury. Best wishes to you.<3 🙂

    2. PS I really like how you related what Jesus said to how those trees are surviving. We do tend to take so much for granted sad to say. My goodness there are people without running water and here in the USA running water is an every day no big deal thing. You really got me thinking, dear friend. ❤

  7. Love those tree roots. They look kind of evil, don’t you think? Ha, ha! You know me! yes, it never fails to amaze me how far you are willing to go to get your pics and I know I miss a lot of what’s going on around me for sure!

  9. What a thrilling sight. For me, it’s like seeing the family unity of trees. The connections and joining and really dependence between them. We must stop raping our forests for we not only hurt ourselves but also these precious families! I have enjoyed your trek and am grateful to be able to enjoy it with you!

  17. Great pics! We don’t think about shooting the trail too often. Glad you did. Outstanding! Sometimes getting there is just as magnificent as the vistas and the destination.

    1. You are so right. As I found out in the getting to destination and getting back to vehicle, the sights were as spectacular if not more so then the actual destination. What a journey! Wish I had kids to tell this tale to!!! GRIN! ❤

  20. Those roots are amazing Amy. The look alive. I mean, I know they are alive, but they look like they might reach out and snag you. I’ve seen roots surface due to erosion before, but never to this extend. Now I’m even more happy that you were able to save your camera during your fall.

    1. I know exactly what you mean, Dan, and yes oh YES was I too very glad my camera was in one piece and had not gotten wet! Standing among those trees made me feel just so small with the wonder of what I was seeing had me say, “Pinch me!” Never have I ever seen anything like this! Those trees were literally clinging to that soil for their very life! SO glad you viewed my images to enjoy the thrill of what I experienced! ❤

    I feel happy for you, that you waited to see the roots until your way back. We can only stay one place a time.
    Yes, we can miss a lot, while our mind are concentrated about one thing, and again we should only be in one place a time. Multi-tasking is one thing, but then we don’t experience anything in total.

  28. I loved the Tree “up on tiptoes!” I saw magic and happy trees,since they are still living in a very challenging place, Amy. Huge hugs for all the photos and sharing the story. Happy belated birthday, dear Amy. Only a couple of weeks since the 28th, right? 😉 We stay at the same age for a whole year!

    1. That fall had more consequences then first thought, Sue. That water was frigid and the air temps chilly. The good news is I am alive and will not be repeating an adventure like this one any time soon. 🙂 ❤
