As with all stories, there is a beginning, a middle, and an end. This post is the ending to my story, my saga, my adventure of when hubby and I went to Niagara Falls. The images that will be found below my story are taken of the American Falls, as I stood on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.
And so my story continues …
Making sure we had all of our equipment when the shoot was finished, we arrived back to our car. Quietly and contemplatively we sat and drank hot tea as our car idled in order for hubby to thaw out his frozen fingers. I was so warm, my hair was plastered to my head, just soaking wet. Yep, I did have enough layers on to keep me warm, believe me!
After drinking our tea, we prepared to head for home. Driving along, the more time went by, the more it felt good to be sitting down, relaxing.
Minutes ticked by and before I knew it, we were approaching the Peace Bridge. Confident that we would be through Customs shortly, hubby drove up to one of the Customs’ Booths, and that is when I got the shock of my life. A huge sign stated, “Have your ID ready for the Customs’ Officer.” (or something like that) Now before 911, one did not need ID to get back into the United States, so I was not prepared for this.
I looked at hubby as we slowly approached the booth, and quietly and with calmness I was not feeling, stated, “Hubby, my purse is in the trunk of the car.” All my ID was in my purse which was in the trunk. Why? Before we went on the photo shoot, we safely locked my purse in the trunk. Returning to the car, I completely forgot about my purse.
Panic. Pure panic ensued within me, and I could also see as well with hubby. We have both heard horror stories that if there is anything out of the ordinary at Customs, anything that could be deemed suspicious, you will get pulled over, and the Customs’ personnel do have the right to tear your car apart. Before hubby could even say a thing after he opened his window, I leaned forward and said,
“Excuse me, Sir, but my purse is in the trunk of our car. I am so sorry for this inconvenience. I did not know I had to show ID again before we entered the States.”
That was the only time I looked at this man. My glance showed me a young man, with no expression on his face, yet he had a kindly air about him.
Rapidly, I opened my car door. I managed to get one foot out on the ground but the other foot got stuck and I just could not move due to my “girth”. Without knowing what else to do, (OH this is NOT happening!) I rocked back and forth, back and forth, in an attempt to get enough momentum going to propel myself out of the door. Wanting in that moment so badly to say to hubby, “Come on, hubby! Give me a push!”, I swallowed the words, keeping my eyes and focus on the ground that I just had to get my feet upon. Keep in mind I looked like this stuffed in endless layers:
Finally enough momentum got me up and out of the car, but with an audible groan. OH NO! Did I just groan out loud? (NO WAY!) I was SO embarrassed!! As fast as I could move, I scuttled back to the trunk of our car, not looking at anyone, keeping my eyes peeled on that trunk, seeing from the periphery of my vision, cars begin to line up behind us. I stood there waiting, waiting, waiting … (The longest moments of my LIFE!)
The color drained from my face. I thought panic was evident in the car when I realized my purse was where it was, but now? What the HECK was hubby doing? I kept on thinking, “Oh my GOD!! We are going to get pulled over! OH my GOD!” Hyperventilating, I then see hubby gesturing for me to step over to the passenger door. Composing my face as best as I could in a neutral expression, (Not a problem, be right with you!) I quickly walked over to my opened door, stooped down and heard,
“Honey, I popped open the gas tank door instead of the trunk. Could you close it?”
REALLY?
Going then to where the gas tank door was, I attempted to close it, once, twice, (OH COME ON!) oh yes, third time the charm! Now I went numb. If we didn’t get pulled over, it would be a Miracle. Standing once more at the trunk, hubby finally maneuvered the right button, and it opened. I never grabbed that pink purse of mind so fast, yet at the same time, trying to act like no big deal, just me and my purse, as I make my way back to my car door.
I landed with a thump in my seat with yet another groan. ME? Again? Oh, this was just TOO embarrassing. This young man who was waiting for our ID must have thought I was a whale of a woman. I sure did look like, believe me!
Unzipping my purse as fast as I could, I got my wallet out. Now due to the extended time my fingers were exposed to the cold, they were stiff. And, in the excitement of the drama I was smack in the middle of, those very fingers were visibly shaking. Multiple attempts to get that ID out failed, (NO NO NO! This really is NOT a good time for these fingers to be stiff!) and finally, OH THANK YOU, GOD!, I was able to retrieve that ID, just about shoving them to hubby who then gave my ID to the Customs Officer.
I closed my eyes, and prayed …. (If ever you hear my prayers, God, now would be the PERFECT TIME for one of those times!)
As this Customs Officer briefly glanced at our ID, I held my breath all set to hear, “Pull over please.” But instead of even asking the usual questions, this Customs Officer, quickly gave our ID back, and said words music to my ears, “Folks, you are all set. Go ahead.” That young man must have seen our panic, our embarrassment, and thought to himself, “Oh these poor fumbling bumbling people. They have been through enough.”
Bless you kindly, Sir. Your kindness I will never forget.
Again I say, see the fear that terrorism perpetrates? There are some really GOOD people in this world, and this Customs Officer is one of them! Now I am planning on returning to Canada someday soon, just to face the fear that was generated on this day, so that I can honestly say, “There is no fear but fear itself!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My goal was to get at least ONE laugh elicited from you. Did I succeed? Can you just picture me as I described myself and what was happening? Only me, honestly, only me! Now I can laugh! Then, I really could not.
Finally finally the pictures do come. Please do enjoy this final look at Niagara Falls in the images below. May what you are about to see, amaze and dazzle. I am SO Blessed with the Gift I have and in so doing, able to bring that Gift to you. Here we go, “The American Falls Up Close And Personal”.
Closer
Closer still (Can you see two people in this image?)
Closer (Do you see a person in this image?)
Closer still
WOW!
Ending with DOUBLE WOW!
May all of you who have come here today to Petals, have found laughter, a good story, and quality photography. Thank you so much for taking your time to view my work. I am truly honored.
Yes! I see a girl, she looks like a ghost, sitting on the edge of the waterfall! Then to the right in the trees I see a face looking at her smilingly. Oh, my gosh!!!
Trini, way cool that you are seeing pictures in my images. Many of my photos when looked at with eyes that look for pictures, will see them. I was actually speaking of people on a walkway in the back, to the left of the waterfalls. LOL (((HUGS))) Amy
Oh Amy, I was blushing for you! Eeeek! Isn’t it strange how we get really nervous around the authorities? Every time I see the police driving behind me, I suddenly panic and find myself unable to drive…bringing even more attention to myself! Argh. I feel for you going through all that, I really do! I bet your heart was beating so fast! At least you can laugh now 😀
I’m glad all was okay in the end. These images are even more spectacular than the first batch – how could that even be possible?! Just stunning! You talented lady, you! 🙂
Aw, thank you, Amanda, for your words of praise. I am really happy you enjoyed Niagara Falls. I won’t lie and say I am sorry this adventure is over, though. The hours I put into this project, I will not miss. LOL And as for Customs, nowadays the Officers are so serious. We got lucky in both going into Canada and going out, for both Officers were extremely nice. I will be going back to Canada soon, just to overcome my fear. I really mean that. I will not allow Customs to keep me away from places I LOVE in Canada. (((HUGS))) Amy
Wow, amy, just taken in by these pictures and took time to blow up each one. When you got me started on the whole person thing, I just started seeing different things everywhere. Each crevice looked like a person to me but I do see the what Trini was talking about in the above comment. Is that what you were referring to?
And Amy, so much better to have a story to go with it. I am picturing you as Ralphie’s brother in a Christmas Story. Thank goodness you didn’t get pulled over but I’m sure the guard new kind people like you weren’t to be questioned.
Marissa, actually I was referring to actual people on a walkway in the back to the left of the falls. LOL Now that I have you knowing my “secret” about finding pictures in my images, I can just imagine you blowing up each photo now and looking for pictures! OH too funny!! It is true though about images appearing in my photographs when you look closely. I cannot explain it. It happens though. As for Customs …. that was a huge sigh of relief. I hope you did at least giggle when I told the story the way I did. Hehehehehe Only me. Quite often things happen to me where I find myself saying REALLY???? LOL (((HUGS)))) Amy
Are you serious about the actual people? You know, it did occur to me that that might be what you were referring to, only after looking I didn’t see any!! So weird. Yes, I was quite taken with those pictures. Blowing them up I swear I entered another world!
Marissa, from now on I will say on each post to take just a moment or two more to click on my photography to enlarge the image. I have YOU to thank for this. I have also been looking at other themes where my work would be full screen. I ask you. Do you think most people would enjoy seeing my work larger? If I can find a theme this way they wouldn’t have to click on the image … it would already be full size. What say you, friend? Love, Amy
Oh yes, Amy. First of all, so flattered that I could lead you in that direction. Seeing your work detailed and full scale would definitely be a bonus, and you know how people can be about taking the time to click through. Now, how you can actually attain this goal is something to contemplate, and, unfortunately, something I know very little about. As you may have ascertained, I’m not the most tech savvy!
Well, I am going to work things out this week, Marissa, so that I can change from the blog I have now, to Awesome. I can still keep the colors I have now, but I must write them down in order for them not to be lost in the transfer. This is exciting, but, being a Taurus, I happen to drag my feet at change. LOL Just know when you see the change YOU helped me decide. And I thank you. (((HUGS))) Amy
Especially now, Marissa. I almost had heart failure this morning. Eleven of my posts were GONE from Petals, 9 of them being of Niagara Falls. I found them in the TRASH. I was SO upset, that I just about walked away from WP. I no longer trust them with my work, and now am figuring out how to create a post outside of WP, back that up, and then copy that to put on Petals. That means even more time on my part. To even think of trying to change themes now and to spend $75 on that theme, I just will not do. It took me hours to get my heart rate back down to normal. I was shaking so hard, I could not breathe. This really takes the cake. I have a lot of thinking to do right now. (((HUGS))) Amy
Yes, I saw your post yesterday morning and was very concerned, especially after not hearing from you or seeing anymore of your posts for the rest of the day. I just said to myself, now Amy has got to be VERY upset. Also, of course, I figured out that investing $75 into a web site that doesn’t seem to be functioning properly for you, doesn’t seem to be very logical. I wish I had something to offer as far as a solution but you now how hopefully un-tech savvy I am! You’ll have to let me know how it all turns out!!
I’m working on a system that I will use from now on, Marissa. Yes, I was extremely upset, yet today I feel much better. Don’t worry I will not be going anywhere … just taking some time to gather myself to return to Balance. This was a shocker, my friend. But it was a good thing it did happen, because now I am saving ALL my work and backing that up. So all is GOOD. 😀
Right. I know this is probably just going to sound dumb to you, because of course you probably do, but do you store your work in your computer before putting it in the blog?
That is exactly what I am doing now, Marissa. I was not before. I groan just to think of all the posts on Petals now that are not saved on my HD nor backed up. I depended on iCloud for backup, which come to think of it, does work. But, that still does not give me my work on my HD. That gives WP all the control of my work. No way, Marissa. I was SO focused on creating, and studying and learning, and what not, that I just didn’t even stop to think, hey wait a minute, WP is NOT on my HD. Now one by one, little by little, I am saving to HD, and backing up. I timed one of my LONG posts today, one of my NF posts. Fifteen minutes it took for me to copy that post to a source on my HD, then copy ALL photos on that post into a folder on my HD, and then transfer all that to my back up device. The short posts piece of cake, just minutes it takes. This may mean I won’t be posting as much, Marissa, I don’t know. I spend so much time here on the computer now as it is, and I just groan to think I will be doing so more. But I am determined that IF a post gets lost on WP that I will have it saved on my HD and backed up. Better safe then sorry!
Oh yes, I guess that amounts to the same thing. All our pics are immediately stored in iPhoto but ultimately they have to be backed up on the HD. iPhoto has let us down before, a similar experience to your recent one I’m sure as we were certain years of family photos had just disappeared!!
Let me make myself clearer. *sighs* All my photographs yes have been saved and most backed up. My written posts, have not been saved on my hard drive, nor backed up. Yes iCloud does back up all my work, but IF WP oops deletes my work, that work is forever gone. So, no more chances taken. Friend, I have over 1,000 posts on Petals right now. How will I ever get all of them copied and saved and backed up? I don’t know. I can only try to do a few a day, working from the beginning and going back. Will I ever get them all? I don’t know that either. I am in quite the mess right now, of my own doing. I started blogging knowing nothing, then got so caught up in the creation and the blogging, I totally forgot about anything about saving and backing up. So, this huge shake up was a very good thing in the end. I really wish I had someone just to sit and get my work copied and backed up. I wish! (((HUGS))) Amy
I don’t know how it happens, but it does. It’s like a puzzle. The more you look the more you see the individual pieces, one more amazing then the other. Beautiful photos Amy. I’ve always been asked for ID coming back into the US, going back as far as the ’70s and on the west coast coming back from British Columbia. The worst was when a friend from England flew here and then drove with me to Toronto for a conference. Coming back in, US Customs had no problem with his ID but asked me a ton of questions about why I only had a drivers license and not a passport. Given you animation and sound effects, he probably thought you deserved a break 🙂
In any case, it was worth it for these photos.
Great pictures. I came here from your comment on OM. I see a couple of faces but they look like druids or something! (That may not be in the spirit of things, eh?) I am following and looking through your earlier posts.
I have some similar shots on a much, MUCH smaller scale here http://atrivialmindatwork.com/2015/03/03/really-big-icicles/ and here http://atrivialmindatwork.com/2015/03/01/really-big-icicles-2/
Whatever you see is for you alone to see. That is the magic of what I do … for those who do see, my pictures contain pictures. The secret is coming out little by little, and those who do see, get quite the surprise. I know I do. 😀 I am always suprised bar none, by what I do capture. I am really glad you enjoyed this post. I went to both links, but only the first one is valid. The second one says the page does not exist. (((HUGS))) Amy
I’m glad I got through too, YellowCable. I had nothing to hide, yet the stories I’ve heard honestly were in my mind as I stood waiting waiting for hubby to pop the trunk. Thank goodness for kind people in this world …. thank goodness! That poor young man probably was so embarrassed for us, who kept making mistake after mistake all in trying to get our ID to him. I’ll never forget this event. (((HUGS))) Amy
Your retelling of your Customs experience is funny, even though it wasn’t for you at the time. At least you have a good sense of humor. Photos, of course, are beautiful – I love the crenulated ice – it’s hard to take in the sheer volume of water passing over these falls and the tons of ice below it.
Eliza, yes thank goodness I have a good sense of humor. In the retelling I put a good laugh on it, or at least I hoped I did. And as for what I witnessed at the Falls, it was one of those times you just will never forget. I am so glad you have been enjoying my Niagara Falls series. Thank you for taking the time to comment. well I can picture you waddling out – ha! and brrrrr – the falls looks so cold – and I have been pulled over a few times and it takes forever – so I sighed with you that he let you go on thru – and actually – in addition to being pulled over – we have also been drilled at the booth a few times too – maybe it was the Florida plates the one time = or who knows what they probe for with certain folks – but seriously could tell some stories.
and my fav of this post are the last 4 – but they had great flow as you zoomed in – and brrrrrrr
Oh? I was lied to, and then ganged up on, by 9 Officers, interrogated in a holding room, was ordered to strip, and had my Rolaids checked for LSD… You weren’t at The Falls! These are close ups of your freezer! LOL! Yes! This was hilarious! Luckily for you, you didn’t float away: Had he a pin, he could have popped you to your trunk… Anyway, So happy to hear you remembered to bring the car! Great to have you back my delicate flower! LMAO!! My most favorite part was when you got your foot stuck and groaned… There goes another Kodak moment :O(
My dear friend Ngobesing, we here who are close to Niagara Falls at times take them for granted, sadly. Growing up with these waterfalls, their greatness at times is not what it should be, just because they have been seen so much. The only way to experience Niagara Falls to the fullest is by being present physically. I hope one day you and your Loved Ones do get the opportunity to come here to actually be in the Presence of such Greatness. I hope my images have brought to you in some small way, an “eye” to see these Mighty Falls. I thank you from the bottom of my Heart for taking the time to enjoy Niagara Falls as I have shown you here at Petals. Bless you!! (((HUGS))) Amy
Thank you my dear Amy. Your pictures are really beautiful. Since we cannot be in all the places we would love to be, having the possibility of seeing such a great site like the Niagara Falls through the eye of your camera is a great blessing. Thank you for always having a lovely word for me and others. With words we build the world one way or the other. Loving words make the world more loving and that I see you doing everyday. Petals is a lovely place. May you have the grace to continue to be a blessing to your family, friends and the world! Lol!
Aw, thanks, Tiny, for the pat on the back. I realized as I wrote this story how challenging it is to get humor across through writing. When I told this story to my sister, due to my voice inflections, and the way I said things, it was actually funnier. She was roaring! Written comedy is not as easy as first thought. I am really happy you enjoyed my efforts in the darkroom. I honestly do not wish to see waterfalls for a while. Thank you. (smile) Now I am tinkering with and studying LR5 and experimenting with how I capture objects using “magic”. LOL Onward and forward. (((HUGS))) Amy
Thank you, Laura, for the pat on the back. Telling this story was even funnier, and I realized as I was writing this how challenging it is to portray in writing comedy. I am SO happy you laughed, because when I wrote it I was laughing. The REALLY? had me in stitches because that is just about what I was saying …. LOL! And as for organizing these pics, thank YOU for noticing. It took a long time to do that. You don’t want to know how many times I realized oops, not in the right order, and to go back and redo. I have fun with my photos as I look for pictures within. I remember growing up with a magazine that was all about pictures with hidden pictures in them. It was so much fun to look for those pictures and to get them right, that I guess I brought this with me into my adulthood. When I mentioned a person, I was really referring to actual people, and I was smiling when some began to see figures within the image itself. I hope I have gotten some curious now to look deeper to see what they can find. And as for your post, LOVED it. LOL I’m giggling myself ….
Torrie, your photos had me wowing out loud, the ones of Niagara Falls. The artistic eye you have is phenomenal in how you caught what you did with your camera. Just wow! Due to time limits and a very busy life, I did not get to the American side, though I LOVE that side too. And to know there is a photographer close by who is as passionate about photography excites me so much! I am SO glad you enjoyed my posts, and yes, that Customs story goes down in history. It was even funnier when I verbally told it. I had my sister howling, wiping tears from her eyes. Only you, Amy, I heard again and again. Yep, the darnedest things seem to happen to me. GRIN! Oh, boy. Thank you for your kind words on the pix….I was quite chuffed with them though I chalk most of it up to blind luck and great scenery! 🙂 Had thought I hit follow before when I was over here, but it’s showing that somehow it didn’t take, so I’ll click it again and see if it goes this time! MOL! Only me, Shrimp. I swear these things happen to me and I am like HUH? I’m glad you laughed because afterwards when I was safely home, I too laughed SO hard. That poor young Customs Officer probably couldn’t get us out of there fast enough. He didn’t even ask the usual questions, no, just “Ok, folks, you are good to go ahead.” or something close to that effect. MOL!! And thank you *blushing* about my images.
