A few short days ago, I decided to go on a photo shoot with my Canon and accessories, and with my Samsung Galaxy Camera 2. Coming off from camera vacation, and jumping into winter photography, shooting with my heavy Canon equipment, I realized how out of shape I had become while only holding a little camera. Huffing and puffing, with full (heavy) backpack on my back, tripod slung over a shoulder, bundled up with a LOT of outer gear on, I trudged through snow to get some pretty amazing shots.
I set up my tripod very low to the ground which meant I had to kneel in the snow (not just once but several times), and while contorting myself as I peered through the view finder, my beautiful (darn!) hat kept on slipping over my eyes. Impatiently and with an audible um well expletive, I tugged my hat back off from my eyes to clear my vision, all along determined to have my eyes peeled on the perfect spot to shoot. And then getting up … well, that was another whole different matter. You bet I groaned out loud. You bet!
And with another verbal um well, OK, my favorite word that begins with an “s”. Use your imagination. (wink) And along with that, a grumbled … “This just doesn’t get easier. Darn!”
When I finished up with the photo shoot (soaking wet from the exertion) and was actually walking back towards my parked car, I stopped and said, “Hey, wait a minute! I have my Samsung with me. Let me take some shots to see how different the images look between the two cameras.” So I turned around and walked back to the spot where I last was shooting.
I did my best to get the exact same shots, but when I used one of my cameras, the sun had come out from behind the clouds. The lighting of course was vastly different. I spent a lot of time in editing rooms, to get each of the following photographs looking almost as if they came from the same camera.
You didn’t think I would make things too easy for you when I would ask you …
“Which one is which? Which photograph was taken by my Canon 50D and which one was taken by my Samsung Galaxy Camera 2?”
Tee hee … I want YOU to tell me in the comments which photo YOU think was taken by my Canon. Good luck to you. I think you will need it. I am going to deliberately wait all day long until I answer you if you are right or if you are wrong.
Again, good luck. You are going to need it!! GRIN! Above all, have FUN!
PS IF you don’t know, don’t feel bad. Even I would have a difficult time figuring this puzzle out. LOL

First, since the lighting is so different in the two shots it is probably not a completely fair apples-to-apples test. The upper picture had sunlight on the right bank of the stream and the lower one was taken when the sun was behind a cloud. That is what makes the colors so different and the foreground of the lower shot so dark.
My guess is that the upper photo is the cell-phone and the lower one is the “real” camera. This is mainly because you can see a lot more detail in the lower shot – for example in the fine tree branches along both banks of the stream. This additional detail is probably a function of the larger physical dimensions of the sensor on the “real” camera. It isn’t “megapixels” that matter as much as the size of the sensor, and the quality of the lens of course.

Well, for starters I did mention in my post that unfortunately the lighting was drastic due to the sun coming out while using one of my cameras. As for an exact photo with the exact lighting … no it was not. My Samsung, also mentioned, is not a cell phone but only a camera. And as for the answer, you will have to wait along with everyone else to find out if you were right. That answer will be posted on my second post for the day, towards evening. This way all who view this post and play will have a fair shot at guessing. So, I hope to see you back here later. (smile) Thank you for playing, John. (((HUGS))) Amy

Truth be told, there was a difference, and I worked one photo especially to come close to the DSLR image. There is much more depth and character with my Canon, which I have noticed a lot. The Samsung is more 2D where my Canon is more 3D. I really missed my Canon, and even if I had to work for these images (and more coming) it really was worth it. ((HUGS))) Amy

Well I think you gave it away when you described the sun coming out for the Samsung shot because you did them 2nd thus more time had passed and being a great photographer you were out before the sun was all the way up. So with that in mind the first one is the Canon and the 2nd Samsung which by the way i like better because of the positioning of the clouds which add more drama. Now otherwise I could not tell which camera was used. For me it is almost never the camera but the photographer who is responsible for the image.

Angie, because the post is up, I will tell you that you are correct. The second photo is the Canon. You were right! My Dad is gaining strength slowly and hopefully can get into rehab soon, as in this week. Thank you so much for praying. This is a tough situation, because deep down my Dad doesn’t want to go on, yet everyone is pushing him to do so. His pacemaker is about the only thing that is keeping his body going. Where do you draw the line? That is what I have been asking. Yes, Life is precious, but if quality is no longer there, do we have the right to keep pushing someone to stay alive just because we want him to? Tough questions. I believe in mercy. Others in my family believe in pushing. Bless you for your concern. (((HUGS))) Amy

I’m not sure if this will help Amy, but I have told my family, and have it written and notorized that when there is no more quality of life they are to let me go. No heroic efforts to keep me alive, but at the same time, no active effort to kill me either. God has given each of us a time to live, and a time to die. Men have invented ways to keep us living long past the time God gave us, but I think that is wrong. I am glad my kids agree with me, although my daughter in law does not agree. I love her, but have told her not to interfere. When it is my time, I’m ready. It is a tough decision for the family to make, and that’s why I took it out of their hands and wrote it down in my Living Will. My Mom has also told me she does not want to be kept alive, and I agree with her. I think that now, at 95, the family will respect her wishes. We would love to keep her with us forever, but that is not in God’s plan for any of us. You will remain in my prayers, along with your Dad, that the rest of your family will accept and understand. It’s hard to let them go, but it’s harder still to watch them suffer. I said goodbye to my Dad in 1992, and his last hours were beautiful, even though very sad. Bless you Amy.

Amy, you cannot compare these two cameras. Your Samsung camera is not in the same class as your Canon 50D and is not on the front edge of mirrorless cameras. This is why pictures are so different. But Samsung camera is not too bad. Everything depends on what you want to shoot and what quality you expect to get. Another things are the weight and size. Small camera is good to have it all the time with you to make some lovely pictures. But with the big DSLR camera it should be like a special session with a lot of preparations. Enjoy both of your cameras. Do not give up with Samsung.
